Characterization of black cotton soil in Kolhapur region

Every piece of land may not be suitable for construction, but due to scarcity of land and sky high prices, one has to use every piece of land for construction purposes irrespective of its bearing capacity. This condition is more crucial in developing countries like India, as urbanization leads to economic development. Constructions activities are taking place at very high rate, and each and every possible land is being brought under construction. Sometimes the soil conditions are very poor even at greater depths. Soil is a complicated material that consists of minerals, organic substances, gases, liquids, and many other things. Every structure requires a foundation, and every foundation must be constructed efficiently, safely and correctly so that it will last. Each type of soil has different properties that affect foundations differently. The black cotton soil is a form of expansive soil with high plasticity that can keep moisture during the dry season; hence, it is excellent for crop cultivation, but it is one of the most difficult soils to build on. It exhibits low bearing capacity, low permeability and high volume change due to the presence of montmorillonite in its mineralogical content. These soils are predominant in states of Andhra Pradesh, Western Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Northern Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and some parts of Southern Uttar Pradesh. This study explores the characterization of black cotton soil collected from different depths in Kolhapur, district in State of Maharashtra, India. Samples of black cotton soil were collected from twenty-eight locations. Different properties of soil were determined, and results obtained from field as well as laboratory tests were analyzed. Variation of different properties with depth was explored. This study also developed empirical correlations of different soil properties with fair accuracy and validations. This will be helpful for civil engineers and contractors as quick guide especially when unmarked area is to be utilized for development in city.
